Artists To Watch In 2007 - December 12, 2006
Power Source Magazine is doing a cover story on newer artists to watch in 2007. John Sines, Jr. has been selected as one of those artists. Please contact Power Source Magazine for details on how to obtain your copy at 615-248-8105!
Power Source reports on a survey by industry professionals that these artists have great potential for success. They certainly have the talent and hopefully the vision for success. Now what? How do you bring it all together in the world of music? Who has the kind of strength, the personality, and the unmistakable something that makes everyone believe in your talent. Who possesses the dedication and formula that can develop their talent into a successful living?
It all starts with a song, a great collection of songs and a good production is a must! The quality of music is most important, find those songs that take you somewhere and make you feel something. Power Source has chosen the following as the artists to watch in 2007. We have asked them to share a few lines about themselves and their plans for 2007.
John Sines Jr: "I must keep trusting in the Lord. The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:33 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." God has blessed this music ministry in so many different ways in 2006. I am certain the blessings I've enjoyed have been because I've been in His will, not mine. The Bible also tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Therefore, my goal for 2007 is to continue to do exactly what I've been doing in 2006. Trusting in Him to direct my path! Jesus is coming soon! I must do my part to share the Gospel of Christ with others through music and by example until He comes."

For John Sines Jr., switching from a career in country music to one in gospel was an easy choice. Despite the fact that he was on the verge of making it big in Nashville - he had a hit single with “The Black #3, a tribute to Dale Earnhardt” - Sines decided to turn his back on the industry in 2003. “I felt God was speaking to my heart to stop singing in places that he didn’t want me to be and songs with topics that he didn’t want me to sing about,” Sines said in a recent Q&A. That means no more songs about lying, stealing or cheating. Instead his songs have a message of hope and finding God during tough times in your life. As his first gospel CD, “Sines of Conviction,” is about to be released, Sines participated in a Q&A with The Burg.
Q: You made the decision to stop playing country music and start with gospel music two years ago. What contributed to this decision?
A: The conviction of the Holy Spirit. He has guided me from then until now.
Q: At the time, you said it was all clear to you the night your band’s bus broke down on the way to a Pennsylvania concert. What about that made things clear to you?
A: The personal struggle that I was going through at the time, the struggle between good and evil, put me in a situation that forced me to decide what side of the fence I was going to be on. I don’t know anyone who says, “You know, I’ve got 2.3 kids, a beautiful wife, good job, nice home, good bank account … I think I’ll go get the Lord today!” It doesn’t work like that. He doesn’t have to, but God sometimes has to put us on our back, before we WILL look up. I was no exception.
Q: With “The Black #3,” you were getting recognized and accomplishing what many musicians set out to do. Was it hard to turn your back on that success and try to start a new career from scratch?
A: It was at first, but I kept believing HIS word and I still believe on it. Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do ALL things through Christ, which strengthens me.” Not some things. ALL THINGS!
Q: Have you always been a Christian?
A: No, I haven’t. I’ve known about Jesus Christ my whole life, but never fully committed myself to him until that life-changing event in 2002 you mentioned earlier. That’s one of the best things about living in this country, especially in this area of the Bible Belt, the people who love Christ are here to share the Gospel with those like me, who need it.
Q: What has your life been like since you made the decision? How has this changed your life in other ways, beyond just the music?
A: Many things have improved since I’ve fully committed. First of all, I have more of a desire to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others than I used to have. My marriage is much, much better as well as my relationship with my children. The wisdom that he has provided to carry out different tasks, and his guidance from making a simple purchase to making a move from one location to the other is something I could have never done on my own.
Q: Was it hard to find a new manager and representation within a new industry? Were there any other challenges involved in crossing over to a new genre?
A: It’s always hard to find GOOD people. Everyone wants to be a part of something they can make money at, but for me, it was more important to surround myself with Christians first. Someone who already has an ACTIVE relationship with Christ will most likely have the same mind-set that I have. Not always, but most of the time. As for the challenges, there were and still are challenges. Anytime you do work for the Lord, Satan is there to try and give you as much headache as he can. However, if it’s the Lord’s will, nothing can stop you!
Q: At the time of your announcement, you said you give your lyrics to your pastor at Lighthouse Baptist Church. Why? Do you still do this?
A: My pastor is a wise man. He knows the Bible. As I began to start writing in this genre of music, I wanted to make sure that my content was correct according to God’s word. Any material that I have doubts about or question myself, I will consult with Pastor Finch.
Q: What has inspired your new songs?
A: God has done a wonderful work in my life. I’ve made a mess out of what he’s given me, but somehow he manages to salvage something. It’s his love and grace and the price he paid. That’s what has inspired ME!
Q: What’s the story behind your first single, “The Man Behind the Hammer”?
A: A friend of mine, Jimmie Campbell, was telling me a story one day of a hammer that he carried around in the tool box on the back of his pickup truck that belonged to his great-granddad. The hammer didn’t have a handle on it, but according to Jimmie, it was “The best hammer I’ve ever had.” He asked me if I could make a song out of this story and so together we began to write “The Man Behind The Hammer.” After we got started I said to Jimmie, “You know, I could put a religious twist on this, if you don’t mind.” So then we went off into another direction on the second verse, which I think worked out well for this piece.
Q: In “Live Another Day,” you talk about how thankful you are for each day, singing “Sometimes it’s hard to catch my breath from trying to keep up ... and time is something I ain’t ever got enough of ... often things come at me from 40 different ways ... But I’m thankful the Lord let me live another day.” Have you always had such a positive outlook on things, or is this something that’s come to you recently?
A: I’ve always tried to write so that the listener either laughs or cries. I don’t think as a writer that you effectively do your job without one or the other, so that is always the goal. To touch a soul deep enough to laugh or cry, by the thoughts you’ve made them think, is always a goal. It’s hard to achieve that. However, now when I write, I do try to look at my cup being half full, rather than half empty. That too, is hard to achieve.
Q: Some of your songs still have a country flavor. Do you think country and gospel music have anything in common?
A: I don’t believe that you can tell a gospel song when you hear it, just by the music alone. To me, gospel music is the “message” of the song. If the message is gospel, but the music is not performed “decently and in order,” then it not only is distracting from the lyric content, but you just have one great big, jumbled up mess. So your message, even though it may be gospel content, gets lost in translation and that’s where it doesn’t become effective gospel music, in my opinion. The song needs to work in harmony with the lyrics, the vocals and the music in order to be a completed piece.
Q: What other types of music influence your sound? (Like, “I’ve Got a Friend” is very bluesy-sounding.)
A: I grew up listening to Hank Williams Jr., Merle Haggard, George Jones, David Alan Coe, Lynard Skynard. These artists are who I developed from. So as far as music goes, I believe that there are really only two kinds: good and bad!
Q: In the past, you’ve described your gospel music as edgy. How so?
A: Well before, I had demoed some songs that were a lot like some of the outlaws that country music is known for, such as Travis Tritt and Charlie Daniels. However, once I started selecting music to put on tape, I decided to make a more traditional country-sounding record that showcased my writing, but kept the country roots I’m proud of. I didn’t get any peace from God on the direction of some of the other edgy music.
Q: Do you have any plans to go back out on the road to promote this CD, or are you staying mostly in and around our area?
A: This is God’s decision. My goal is to remain in HIS will, not mine. I have recently been invited to join the Christian Country Music Association and to perform at their convention held in Nashville later this year. This new single is going out to Christian radio and country radio Aug. 1 nationwide, and the CD will be available at New Life Christian Book Store and The Mustard Seed on Aug. 1 in Lynchburg, too. … The success of the single will determine whether we land national distribution to retail stores. God’s leading me, so wherever he leads, I’ll follow.
Q: Would you say your early interest in music came from your parents, also musicians? Was music their career, or a side project they pursued?
A: Yes, it mostly came from my parents, who had a band that played around town. If my parents would have been into raising ducks, I probably would have, too! My dad runs his own transmission business in Bedford and my mom has her own produce business in Florida.
Q: You put your first band together at 14 years old - when did you know a career in music was something you wanted to pursue?
A: I’ve always known. I’m not sure how, but I’ve always known.
Q: Last time we checked in with you, you were a stay-at-home dad, taking care of your three children. Are you still doing that these days?
A: No, I’m not at home as much as I was, however taking care of three IS A FULL TIME JOB.
Q: You also had plans to read the Bible in a year. How did that go?
A: I’m still trying to achieve THAT, too!
