Jimmie Campbell and I were riding around after lunch one day and he said to me, "I have this hammer in my tool box that belonged to my great grandaddy. It don't have a handle on it right now, but it is the best hammer I've ever owned." We took that idea and wrote "The Man Behind The Hammer". It tells the story of the crucifixion in a different way, I don't think I've ever heard told.
1st Verse
This ole hammer that I use every day
Belonged to my great granddad
It can drive a nail better
Than any hammer that I’ve ever had
That ole house over on the hill
Was built when my dad was just a kid
And I plan on building mine with this hammer
The same way that my great granddaddy did
Chorus
The man behind the hammer
Had no way to ever know
That the nails that he was driving
So many years ago
Would lay the foundation
With every single swing
He built a home for the future
For his family
2nd Verse
Now every day he’d head off to work
Never knowing what his boss had in mind
But he always carried that hammer
For the nails that he knew he had to drive
But that soldier never would have guessed
That the nails that he would drive that day
Were into the hands of a stranger
For a debt that just had to be paid
